The ultimate running dog, the greyhound is built for speed. Its long arched back and legs empower it to extend and contract maximally while doing the double-suspension gallop. It has great muscle tissue and light legs, further enhancing speed. The feet are long and narrow, giving maximum influence. The long tail serves as a rudder and brake when running at high speed. The coat is short and smooth. Two sorts of greyhounds are available: AKC (show) and NGA (racing). Retired NGA greyhounds are sturdier, smaller and faster than show dogs and might be more prone to pursue small creatures.

About greyhounds

The Greyhound is devoted and brave. Intelligent, caring, capturing and laid back, its character is generally undervalued because of its reserved conduct toward strangers and also its master. Greyhounds are sensitive to the tone of one's voice and aren't going to listen if they sense they are stronger minded than their owner, however they will also not react well to harsh discipline. Owners have to be serene, yet possess an air of natural authority. Socialize nicely to avoid timidity. As a rule, they're even-tempered and tender --both racing lines and show lines. Most Greyhounds get a certain prey drive. It's instinctive for these dogs to chase something that goes fast. They are extremely rapidly plus some will kill cats as well as other domestic animals, while this is not the bulk (just about 20% of ex-racers are overly "exquisite" on chasing prey to ever be safe with little animals). About 10% are instantly okay because of low prey instinct, as well as the others can be trained to leave cats and other little pets in the house alone. They infrequently present problems with several other dogs and are normally good with kids, though they do not ordinarily enjoy roughhouse play, and would not be a great option for young children who are seeking a playmate. Inside, these dogs are calm and sociable to some point at the place where they could even be looked at lazy. They bond strongly with their own people, have tremendous stamina, and don't bark much. Show lines are usually of a different body style than racing lines, and are often more angulated. Greyhounds aren't particularly alert. Show lines are usually bred more for temperament and a bit heavier than racing lines, which are bred for speed. Nonetheless, racing lines additionally make terrific pets. There are numerous adoption groups all over North America, Europe and Australia to put these tender, loving dogs when they retire. The Greyhound needs an even tempered, tender but firm loving owner who understands how to consistently communicate the tenets of the house. A Greyhound that knows his location in his own pack and what's expected of him is a joyful Greyhound.

Take a look at the greyhound information video below:

How much exercise do greyhounds need?

Greyhounds that are kept as pets should have regular opportunities to run free on open ground in a safe area, in addition to daily long, brisk walks, where the dog is got to heel beside or behind the person holding the lead. In a dog's head the leader heads the way and that leader must be the individual. Greyhounds adore a regular routine.

Hamster are a ball of fun, but can you really teach your hamster tricks? Well it's true you can really teach your hamster a few basic tricks but you need lots of time and patience. Below are just a few simple tricks people have trained their hamsters.

Teaching your hamster to stand

To do this requires treats (and lots of them!) simply hold a treat over the hamsters head whilst stand (or which ever command you want to use). This can take a considerable amount of time but after a while your hamster should be able to stand on his own when you say stand.

With a few changes to this method you can also train your hamster to jump simply by raising your treat above his head and saying "jump" when he jumps for the treat.

Teach your hamster to climb

This comes natural to most hamsters, but did you know hamster can climb stairs? To train your hamster to climb your stairs (or other objects) just place some treats above each step. This will then encourage your hamster to climb the step (if he hasn't already)

Guide through a hoop

If you have a small hoop you can train your hamster to go through it (and even jump through it when he has experience). Many hamsters can do this without the aid of treats just by putting the hoop in front of him, as you do this a few times try raising the hoop (only slightly) to see him jump it.

Hamsters are really fun creatures and can be trained many basic tricks. Have you trained your hamster any tricks? The team at The Pet News would love to see your pictures/videos! send us your links and pictures in the link below or on our Facebook, Twitter and Google Plus and we may even show them on our website.

Train your hamster tricks

When it comes to teaching your dog to sit, it can be quite a long and repetitive task but well worth it in the end. In the guide below we will show you some simple steps on how to teach your dog to sit the fun way.

Make sure you have dog treats to hand

The key to training your dog to sit is by dog treats and/or praise, this shows that dog that when he does what he is told he will be rewarded and encourage him to do it again. It is also important to remain clam and assertive to show that you are in charge.

To begin the dog training, start by standing in front of the dog with your dog treat locked in your hand. By standing in front of the dog shows that you are in control and allows him to focus on you more whilst you begin the training.

With the dog now focused on you, his nose may be curious wondering what is in your hand, so keep your hand locked so he does not see the treat.

The next step you will need to do is move your hand slowly over the dogs head, this will raise his head as and alert him that something smells good in that hand.

Make sure to say sit to your dog

With your dogs attention fully on the scent of your hand, slowly move your hand towards his tail whilst making sure you say your dogs name followed by "sit". It may take a few times to get this, but he should start to sit down.

The Pet News

Reward your dog

So your dog has just sat for the first time, it's a really happy moment for you and your dog so dont forget to praise and give him your treat! this will encourage him that he has done right and he will be rewarded for this.

You can then take training further by saying when he is allowed to move again using the words "release" after you have praised him.

How long will training my dog to sit take?

Training your dog any trick will take time, it all depends on the dog and how quick he is at learning new things. The key to teaching your dog any trick is being repetitive and rewarding, don't spend hours training your dog one trick as he will probably get bored, just try a few times each day and you will start to see progress.

Have you recently trained your puppy/dog to sit? we would love to hear from you. Get social with The Pet News by leaving us a comment below on your experiences or follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Google plus.

You will also need to make sure you have a hutch snuggle for the cold nights to keep your rabbit warm. Finally you will also need an exercise run to allow your rabbit to let off some steam and run round crazy, but make sure to put a cover over the top if your rabbit if going to be unsupervised!

So you've just bought your first puppy home, got him all settled in and are ready for the training to begin, but when should you really start puppy training?

When to start puppy training

It is recommended to start basic puppy training immediately as soon as you bring it home, you can train it yourself or you can get help from a professional dog trainer if you are unsure what to do.

Types of dog training

Their are 2 types of dog training behavioural which prevents and corrects bad habits your dog may do such as jumping up at people, excessive barking, chewing your furniture etc... and obedience which is training your dog commands such as sitting, roll over, teaching to heel and other cool things like barking on command.

When it comes to training your puppy it is especially important to be the pack leader from the start, this means showing the dog who is boss and discipline when your dog has done wrong, this may be hard (especially when puppies are so cute) but it's something that must be done otherwise your dog will rule the house.

House train your puppy

When should you start
puppy training?
This is perhaps the first thing you will need to teach your new puppy. House training can be frustrating especially if it's not progressing fast enough, but the key is to be patient! Below are some key points to remember when toilet training your puppy:

  • Frequent access to the toilet - this is more likely to encourage the puppy to go outside and do his businesses, it is also less likely to do his business in the house.
  • Reward your puppy - This helps the puppy to realise he has done good which will encourage the puppy to keep doing it outside.
  • Start a schedule - this will get your puppy in a routine
Even though it can be really annoying when your puppy poops inside, you must not punish him physically, just keep calm and encourage to do it outside, you will soon see results just keep at it.

Have you recently had a puppy? we would love to hear your comments on training and what tips you can recommend to other users at The Pet News.

Adopting a dog can be a life changing and very rewarding, especially if they have suffered from a very cruel lifestyle you can really make a difference to their life. But before you go to your local dog adoption centre, there are some important steps you need to take.

Responsible dog owners

Before visiting your local dog adoption centre it is important to understand why you really want to adopt a dog and do you think you are responsible to handle a rescue dog? The last thing you want is for the dog to be re-homed after a few months because you are unable to handle the dog.

You will also need to see how your family feel about having a dog and what sort of lifestyle you have, if you are quite active and don't spend much time in the house, do you really think it's fair to leave your adopted dog alone all that time?

Should you adopt a puppy, adult or senior dog
Why you should adopt a puppy, dog
or senior dog

It can be a really tough choice deciding what type of dog you should adopt, puppies may look cute but they still very young and can be quite energetic compared to senior dogs that may start having a few health problems.

Why adopt a puppy

Puppies are full of life, love being playful (and biting everything they see) and are very cute. But puppies are just like babies and need lots of care, attention and training which some people may not have the time/patience for.

Training your adopted puppy is very important, you will need to teach it right from wrong so it may be worth taking your puppy to dog training which will also allow your puppy to socialise with other breeds of dogs. Socialising will also give your puppy more confidence and feel comfortable around other dogs.

Adopting an adult or senior dog

Adopting an adult or senior dog a great option for owners who do not have the time of patience of training, socialising and exercising  a puppy. One benefit from adopting an adult rather than a puppy is you know exactly what you are getting such as the temperament and size.

How do I find my local dog adoption centre?

If you have finally decided you want to adopt a dog you can begin searching for a local dog adoption centre on The Pet Guide's friendly search website www.thepetguide.co.uk and begin the road of dog adoption.

Are you in the process of adopting a dog? perhaps you have already adopted one? We would love to hear your thoughts on dog adoption, the ups and downs. So get social with The Pet Guide and leave a comment or follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Google Plus.
With the summer holidays approaching, choosing a cattery that is perfect for your cat is that last thing you want to thing about. But with many boarding cattery locations in the UK how do you choose the right one?

Choosing a boarding cattery

Before choosing a cattery you firstly need to find out what are the best local boarding catteries about in your area, research and talking to your local cat community is the key to finding the right one.

You can firstly start off by visiting a boarding cattery finder to find what is near you, then do plenty of research, read reviews and speak to others about their experiences. If you then feel confident you have found the right cattery, the next step is to get in contact with them.

Types of catteries

There are quite a few different types of catteries with different types of cattery accommodation, you will always have your basic accommodation that offers a room, bed for you cat and a few toys. However some catteries offer designer/luxury accommodation  which can offer fancy bedding, web cams to see your cat 24/7 and more.

What to look for in catteries

Most importantly you will want to make sure that your cat will be safe staying in your chosen cattery, here are just a few tips to look out for when visiting:

Up to date cat vaccination
All catteries should ask if your cat is fully vaccinated, if not then walk away as you don't know what kind of cats have entered the cattery with illnesses and diseases.

Friendly, helpful staff
Having friendly staff really goes a long way, most staff should be happy to meet your requirements if your cat has certain regimes, or needs medication at certain times.

Well secured
The last thing you want is to come back from your holiday to find your cat has escaped the cattery, although this rarely happens its always good to assess the premises and make sure you feel happy leaving your cat there.

Does the cattery have an outdoor run?
Having an outdoor run for your cat prevents the spread of bacteria and viruses within the cattery by allowing a better ventilation, and cats love the outdoors!

How much do catteries cost?

Prices of catteries can vary depending on the area and types of accommodation. You will often find that more quiet areas are cheaper (with prices being as low as £4 per day compared to £15 in more busier areas). The type of accommodation can play a big part in price as well with some luxury cat accommodations costing up to £30 a day.

How to choose the right cattery

Choosing the right cattery really comes down to you and your preferences, but to start it is best to see what local catteries are available in your area, then start booking appointments.

Are you trying to find a local cattery? We would love to hear you experiences, leave a comment below or follow The Pet Guide on Facebook, Twitter and Google+.

Rabbits can be found in almost every pet shop, they are soft, cuddly and playful but should you really buy a rabbit?

Why buy a rabbit
Why buy a house rabbit

Rabbits can make excellent house pets, and like cats they can be house trained by using a litter box. Rabbits usually interact well with humans and can become quite affectionate but their are some things you should consider before taking the big step in buying a rabbit.

Rabbits need time, commitment and fresh food

Like all house pets, rabbits will need daily attention and feeding fresh food daily. Because rabbits are herbivores they will also need fresh hay and pellets unlike dogs who tend to eat your leftover scraps of food.

You will also need to give your rabbit plenty of space and exercise, they love to run, jump and like to have their odd twists when jumping in the air. It can also be quite funny and amusing watching it have its mad 5 minute moment dashing round the house/garden without a care in the world.

Some rabbits can be destructive

Rabbits love chomping and chewing on all kinds of things, and because they don't know right from wrong you will need to be careful and keep close eye contact on them when wondering the house, the last thing you want is it getting shocked from chewing through and electrical cable!

In addition to being destructive, some rabbits can take a bit more time than other animals to be comfortable round people which is why it may not be a great idea having a rabbit as your first pet.

What health problems do rabbits have?

Rabbits tend to have problems with overgrown teeth if not checked up by a vet regularly. Other problems rabbits may have are foot problems, digestive issues and respiratory problems. But this should not put you off having one, as properly cared for rabbits can live a long and happy life and make great house hold pets.

Rabbits can make excellent and rewarding pets

Despite being pretty quite animals they do make great pets and can communicate very well such as stamping their paws when angry and grinding their teeth when being fussed and played with. They enjoy playing with other rabbits, toys and shredding the local newspaper and (depending on the type of rabbit) can be very affectionate wanting attention and fuss.

With pet insurance costing anywhere from £10 to £80 (for premium pet insurance) is it really worth paying for pet insurance?
Do you need pet insurance?

Why have pet insurance?

Pet insurance gives you peace of mind for when your pet becomes ill, because treatments and surgeries can cost hundreds, even thousands if your pet becomes seriously ill and needs an operation.

Do I need pet insurance?

Did you know the average pet insurance claim is around £420 for dogs and £470 for cats? and that is not counting if your pet has developed an on going condition. So you really you need to think can you afford vet bills if this happens or should you purchase pet insurance.

Most insurances will not pay for basic treatments such annual jabs and minor injuries, and some insurances will only cover your pet if they have had their annual jabs so make sure you always read the policy before signing it.

Get the right pet insurance cover

With pet insurance you only get what you pay for, and with so many options available its always vital that you look for the best policy and not always the cheapest pet insurance. Remember to also decide whether it is worth getting pet insurance when your pet is younger rather than older as it is more expensive (even more so if your pet has an exisiting medical condition).

Types of pet insurance

There 3 main types of pet insurance

Capped pet insurance
This type of insurance will be a cap on the amount you can claim on your pet each year but you can continue to claim on the life of the policy. This type of pet insurance is good for pets with no or short term illnesses.

Limited cover pet insurance
The limited cover pet insurance offers a limit paid and the duration of time your pet will be covered. This type of cover is good for puppies and and animal with short term illnesses.

Lifelong pet insurance cover
This type of pet insurance cover is great but if often the most expensive type of cover. Unlike limited and capped pet insurance cover, with lifelong pet insurance cover you can claim on each instance throughout the life of the cover of the policy and whats best is their is not usually a limit on what you can spend and when.

Are you contemplating getting pet insurance? share your stories with The Pet Guide by leaving a comment below or following us on Facebook, Twitter and Google +.

Dogs can be expensive, damage your favourite pair of shoes, eat a lot, sleep a lot and require a lot of love and attention.

So why should you get a dog?

Benefits of having a dog
There are many reasons why you should get a dog and how getting a dog can benefit you physically and mentally, below I will discuss some great benefits or owning a dog:

Dogs can help keep you social, active and lose weight

Physical exercise is important to humans as part of a healthy diet, but motivating yourself to go ahead and do this is a different story. Dogs need to be walked everyday in rain, sleet, snow and sun and will often tell you when they want to go out, this is a great way of forcing you to get out and see what's going on in the world and meet other dog owners.

Dogs are ALWAYS happy to see you

No matter what time or how long ago you have left the house, a dog will always be happy to see you something that doesn't always happen with family members and friends.

Dogs teach your responsibility

Having a dog requires a lot of responsibility, you have to learn how to clean up after them, feed your dog, teach him, and discipline him. Dogs also tell you how they are feeling by their different tones of voice so you will need to pay close attention to their body language to tell whether they need the toilet, feeding or even just some love and attention.

No need to throw away your left over food again

Dogs are like dustbins, they will eat just about anything! and you wont need to worry about those little bits of food that drop on the floor, as soon as you look down you dog has already eaten it. Remember to be a good dog owner and not let your dog eat something they shouldn't, some foods like chocolate are poisonous to dogs.

Feel safe and protected with a dog

Dogs can be very protective of their owners, how many times have we all heard are dogs growling at the door being knocked, although it may be intimidating to the person knocking, it gives you that sense of safety and protection. Dogs also can see any hear anything that goes on in the house before you do.

These are just a few reasons on why you should get a dog and what are the benefits of having one, but it all comes down to the owner.

Get social with The Pet Guide and let us hear your comments on why you have (or deciding to have) a dog and what benefits you have had.

Pet bakeries selling personalised handmade dog treats, cupcakes and even birthday cakes for dogs are a big hit the USA and can now be found online in the UK thanks to an online pet bakery based in Staffordshire.

Bertz Pet Bakery offer a very unique range of personalised dogs treats and cakes that you wont find in any of the local pet shops, and we were just itching our hands on getting a few samples to try out with our pet dogs.

Birthday cakes for dogs

Birthday cake for dogs - Bertz Pet Bakery
What makes Bertz Pet Bakery different to any other dog treat manufacture in the UK is the fact they offer a wide range of healthy, handmade cakes and birthday cakes (yes you heard right birthday cakes for dogs!) and it seems to really have an effect on dog lovers in the UK as hundreds are shipped out every month to dog owners up and down the country.

What do they put in dog treats?

I am always keen to understand exactly what goes into dog treats to make sure my dogs get the very best dog friendly ingredients. Bertz Pet Bakery use dog friendly locally sourced ingredients such as peanut butter, eggs, flour, cheese and oats, but what i was really interested in, is how they decorated their birthday cakes for dogs.

Dog safe alternative to chocolate

Many dog owners realise that chocolate is extremely bad for dogs, this is because chocolate contains a toxic to dogs called theobromine. Bertz Pet Bakery use a dog safe alternative to chocolate called carob in all of their dog treats and cakes for dogs which looks and and tastes like chocolate but is completely safe for dogs.

Personalised your dog birthday cake

The birthday cake for dogs and cupcakes for dogs also have yoghurt frosting to pipe your dogs name on the cake which gives it that extra special feel (even though your dog wont realise it), for the other colourings on the cake Bertz Pet Bakery use natural colouring such as beetroot - a full list of ingredients can be found on their dog treat ingredients page.

Other dog treats available

What has made this pet bakery stand out from other dog treat manufacturers is how unique their dog treats are and how much detail goes into them. For instance Bertz Pet Bakery offer a range of themed dog treats such as:

After trying and testing these dog treats on our own dogs, they were very much satisfied with their treats and we were very impressed with the presentation. All our treats were delivered in special windowed gift boxes (a bit different to your ordinary treats). We especially liked the fact of our dog treats being personalised (for free i might add) giving that more unique feel.

If you are after a very unique and healthier approach to dog treats, we definately recommend trying Bertz Pet Bakery out - you can visit and purchase all the dog treats, birthday cakes for dogs and cupcakes for dogs from their website www.bertzpetbakery.co.uk

Their comes a time in every pet owners life when they need to visit the local veterinary practice, but with so many vets in different shapes and sizes in the UK how do you know which one is right for you?

Finding the best local vets near you

To help find your closest vet surgery The Pet Guide has searched all over the UK to find as many veterinary practices as possible, and with over 3000 local vets listed you can be sure to find your closest vet practice.

To begin your search visit www.thepetguide.co.uk/vets to find your nearest vets, this will then display a list of all local vets within your search criteria. Once you have selected your preferred vets it will then give you all the vital information you need such as the vets address, contact number and other useful information.

Review your local veterinary practice

After you have selected your surgery we always recommend doing a bit of research and reviewing your vets, just to see how others feel about how their pet was treated, what sort of transport is available to get their and of course prices.

Other issues you may also want to consider:

  • What sort of treatments and facilities does the veterinary practice offer
  • What sort of animals are treated
  • Emergency out of hours information
  • Are they an accredited RCVS (Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons)

Is your local Veterinary Surgeon an accredited RCVS (Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons?

The RCVS accredit local vets by the services/facilities they offer, they always go under a professional inspection every 4 years by professional veterinary surgeons and can be also subject to random spot checks in-between this time.

How do I know if my local veterinary surgery is RCVS?

RCVS accredited veterinary practices usually display their logo somewhere in the front of the veterinary practice, if you are unable to see this logo simply ask at reception and someone should be happy to show you their accredited certificate.

I have chosen my local vets, what next?

Great news on finding your local vets! now it's time to arrange a booking without your pet to get an overall feel for the veterinary practice and facilities and ask questions, if you are worried about anything or something does not look or feel right ask.
Other things you may also consider:
  • Does the veterinary surgery look clean and well organised?
  • How many staff members does the vets have? In some veterinary practices, surgeons can share responsibility for clients due to holidays etc...
  • Can you communicate well with the staff? This is important when trying to discuss what may be wrong with your pet

What happens if I am not happy with my local vets?

That's not a problem! Simply head on back over to www.thepetguide.co.uk/vets and search for another local vet near you. Veterinary surgery's like normal businesses expect clients to come and go all the time so if you are unhappy with your local vets for any reason simply change, however remember to ask for a copy of your pets medical records to be sent across to your new vets (your new vets are normally happy to do this).

Have you recently searched for a local vets? tell us your thoughts about it and what kind of experience you have had by leaving a comment below.

Horse back riding is a great activity loved by many which can even turn into a career. Pretty much anyone can learn to ride and you don't need to be a master equestrian to learn how to do it. In this guide we will show you some simple tips for beginners learning to ride horse back and how to go about finding a local stable near you.

Finding a local horse stable & equestrian training near you

In order to succeed at riding horses you will need to find a local horse riding stable which offers horse riding training (unless you live on a stable in which case your sorted!). We recommend using The Pet Guides local stable and equestrian training finder which searches hundreds of horse stables and training near you easily. Once you have found your local horse stables you are good to get started.

Your first riding lesson

On your first horse riding lesson your instructor will go through all the basics with you and introduce you to your horse you will be riding, your horse will usually be calm and experienced until you have had more lessons and are confident to try a different horse.

Your riding instructor will also go through steps and help you prepare your horse for riding such as grooming and tacking your horse.

After you have had several lessons you can then learn about the different types of horse riding (which will be discussed in a different post) such as show jumping, dressage, trail riding and more.

So now that you know some basics about horse riding start finding your local horse riding or equestrain training centre at www.thepetguide.co.uk and start your horse riding today.
